Topic: Another one bites the dust Posted: 05 November 2008 at 11:13am |
Well that makes three I guess. I just went for an 8 weeks scan and they cant see a foetus in the pregnancy sac. It frustrates me they won't confirm that the pregnancy is lost, just have to do serial HCG and go for another scan in a week. I just want it to be over with so I can focus on what comes next. Am seriously thinking about IVF or adoption - and is surrogacy too out there for NZ?

Sorry to hear you are going through this JHS. I also had a blighted ovum and it was 9 weeks and 3 scans and 16 blood tests before they would confirm it was a blighted ovum.
Having IVF does not exclude you from experiencing this.
I do hope that another scan and more bloods will show that everything is ok :)

I'm so sorry you are going through this.
I have been in a similar situation recently where there was no fetus in the sac in my 7 and 8 week scans. I think that basically it means the the pregnancy is probably not viable although no one knows for sure yet. On the internet (particularly at a site called misdiagnosedmiscarriage.com) there are first hand stories about people who have found a fetus with a heart beat after seeing an empty sac at 8 weeks or later, so this does happen occasionally. Unfortunately for me, my hcg levels started to drop which confirmed the loss. This was also my third loss so I have some idea of the anguish that goes with repeated losses.
Please take care of yourself.

I am so sorry you are having to go through this, you poor thing, my heart goes out to you.
I am going through a very similar thing at the moment. I had a scan last thursday which found an irregular shaped empty sac + fluid in one of my tubes.
I had an emergecy scan yeasterday and repeated Hcg tests done and my levels were dropping rapidly.
I don't know if this is technically my 2nd as my 1st was an ectopic at 6w 2d in june 08.
I must say this experience, if it can possibly be, has been much easier to deal with than the ectopic (A lot less pain, so far anyway)

I'm just frustrated that everything takes so long, and its like my specialist doesnt want me knowing too much. He has explained very little about the causes of luteal phase defect, and even told me off for doing my own research on the internet. He has basically told me all we can do is keep trying, that just seems ridiculous given what they can do with modern medicine. Surely there is something else out there? I asked him about B6 and he said it doesnt work, I have also read that accupuncture can maybe help - time for some alternative therapies I think.
Does anyone know a good obs/gyn in the Wellington Lower Hutt area?
Still nothing with regards to this pregnancy. I am spotting but very little - off for another scan on Thursday.

We're currently with Dr Sangalli and I have found him to be very good. He was very good with my last MC - we were due to see him for an 11 week visit but by this time I was bleeding so we went anyway, he did a scan and confirm it was a missed MC. Gave me some drugs to help things along, didn't work so was then in for a D&C. I would have to say that so far he has been very great.

There are things that can be done to prevent recurrent miscarriage if an underlying cause is found. You should be able to find an ob/gyn who will do some investigative blood tests for you. I used Fali Langdana at Wakefield Specialist Medical Centre. He was pretty thorough on the tests although wasn't very helpful during my subsequent pregnancy as I was not using him as my LMC.

Oh also, I have been seeing an acupuncturist, Katrina Gascoyne at the Centre of Oriental Medicine in Mana and she is very experienced and specialises in fertility issues. She is difficult to get an appointment with though.

Thanks guys. I have done the clotting tests, just genetic testing to go. They think it is a luteal phase defect, but there just isnt much you can do to treat it apparently. I will try the acupuncturist thanks vanillabean

I think for luteal phase defect there is nothing that is proven to work but there are things that might work, like progesterone supplementation, and also using a drug like clomid to stimulate ovulation. The idea being that the luteal phase defect is caused by ovulation not happening properly. Unfortunately, though in the field of recurrent miscarriage it seems there are very few proven treatments. Acupuncture would definitely be worth trying because its all about bringing the body into balance.

JHS - I think your doctor is being ridiculous. If he's not going to answer your questions then of course you'll go somewhere else to find the answers and he should not talk down to you for doing so!! Sorry - I find bad doctors sooooo frustrating.

I had a great chat with my doc the other day. I was the last appointment of the day and so he wasn't in a rush, and we talked for half an hour about my options for the next one.
I am so pleased he has agreed to put me on clomid, asprin, and natural progesterone suppositories - this is a big change from him saying their isn't much else he can do.
He also took the time to really explain LPD, which was very helpful. So now Im hanging out for this mc to be complete so I can try again with the clomid!
