Hi, I was wondering about the significance of adjusted age. I understand that twins have an actual age and an adjusted age based on due dates, but I dont get why. I thought twins always came early as they developed quicker and obviously theres the space issue, so if they came at 35 weeks then that was almost like full term. and how long do you keep saying actual and adjusted ages? And does it mean they get two birthdays?!?!

Anyway, I'd just appreciate someone taking the time to "unconfuse" me please.

Thanks heaps, and full respect to those of you growing and developing more than one baby at a time, one can be hard enough at times.

Adjusted age is just used in relation to their development and reaching milestones, not to give them a second birthday!

For example, if a baby is born at 30 weeks, they are not expected to reach a milestone such as sitting until approx 10weeks after their peers who are born at fullterm.

Thats pretty much how I understand it anyway!

Twins dont develop quicker, they are usually born earlier than single babies and that is one of the reasons why twin pregnancies are higher risk.

Adjusted age is relevant to any premature baby not just twins and is used to assess growth, feeding skills, and development.
Adjusted age is referred to as long as it is relevent but not longer than 2 years of age when even the micro prems have usually caught up.

Twins often come early due to complications with the pregnancy resulting in risk to either the mum or bubs. And most are induced no later than 37/38 weeks due to the placenta not being able to handle any more growth after that time. Hence 37 weeks is often classed as full term for twins. They don't develop quicker than a singleton.

Thanks Kellz. I guess by developed quicker I meant grow quicker in the womb, at least thats what a friend told me who knew someone who had 2 8lb boys at about 35 weeks.

Is there a time that you dont adjust from? eg if they are "only" 4 or 5 weeks early or something? Though that would depend on how many babies you had.

Good advice on the corrected age.

Twins do not develope quicker size wise or in any other way but I have read that later in the pregnancy (maybe 33 + weeks) the lungs mature a little faster in multiple preganacies as the body recognises there is less room and a birth is likely and tries to compensate which I think is amazing. So that is part of why 37 weeks is classed as full term for twins.

In regards to when specialists adjust or not is there development really and weight. Mine were born at 35weeks but quite tiny for that gestation so up until their first birthday their adjusted age was taken into account with specialists/Plunkets visits when weight/measurements were taken.

If you do need to adjust their age then it usually means you're also seeing a specialist about their development(at a guess) and I'd imagine that once the specialist/Paediatrician had 'signed' your child off then you don't need to adjust. Not sure on this but I was signed off/no more visits from specialist to track their development (had other appointments for other things though) at 1 year because he said they were healthy & he had no further concerns to warrant future visits.

I hope that helps

Twins confuse a lot I had one such instances, both were dressed alike.
I asked one whether I can find the food shop while I was hungry then.
After few moments I spotted another roaming around nearly 2 km away. I was just staring at him, he said politely don't stare I am not the one you has encountered and said "bye, bye".
This incident confused me a lot.
